The Genomedical Connection: Final Report

Genomedical Connection incorporated the CCFHH project into the education component of their initiative. The education component of TGC targets the English speaking Guilford County residents’ age 18 years and older. As part of TGC, a community needs assessment was conducted to learn about their knowledge, awareness and attitudes of Genomics and family health history. Results from this assessment indicated that the community was aware that family health history is important. However, they did not know how or what information to collect. “The Guide for Family Health History” and “The Guide to Understanding Genetics and Health” booklets help explain not only the importance of knowing family health history, but also how and what to collect when taking a family health history.
The CCFHH booklets were distributed to the community though multiple channels. These included health fairs, presentations, focus groups and the project’s website. The booklets were distributed with other materials created by TGC, including newsletters and brochures. Five thousand copies of each booklet were printed and incorporated into TGC’s community education through multiple distribution channels.

The booklets will be distributed to the community for the remainder of TGC’s funding period (April 2012). Other venues will be added for distribution, including primary care physician offices and clients of lawyers specializing in Elder Care. It is anticipated that if all of the booklets are disseminated into the community before the end of the project, that TGC will commence with a second printing at a lower level (500-1000 booklets).
